Daily Bullets (Aug. 5): How Boynton Got In on Two Five-Stars

Published

on

Back at it after a weekend out of town – Mrs. Bullets and I returned sane after taking the twins (turning two this month) on a pair of three-hour car rides. I tip my hat to parents who can travel further with smaller kiddos.

• Hovland reels in a top-five finish
• Chris Carson update in Seattle

OSU Bullets

• Mike Boynton didn’t check the recruiting rankings then go out and offer a pair of five-stars in Bryce Thompson and Cade Cunningham. Boynton got there before the delivering doctor left the room.

(Boynton) discovered Cunningham by accident in the first live period after getting to Oklahoma State, in 2016, when he was then an assistant for Brad Underwood. Boynton was the first coach at a high-major program to offer Cunningham.

The same is true of Bryce (Thompson), who got a scholarship offer from Oklahoma State when he was 14. In fact, after Boynton got the head job when Underwood left for Illinois in March 2017, among his first calls as acting head coach was to Rod Thompson to assure him that Bryce’s scholarship offer for 2020 was not only still on the table, but of the utmost priority. Ok, not that early. But being there early and establishing relationships that have sustained while the big boys called appears to be the epitome of who Mike Boynton is as a coach and recruiter.

• Viktor Hovland finished T5 yesterday in the Carolinas but is certainly a victim of the short time frame to lock-in his tour card.

(Hovland) came up short in his bid to win or finish T2 and earn his PGA Tour card for 2019-20, but it was his best showing yet in a year that has included five top 25s in nine starts. Jordan Spieth (see below) has seven top 25s in 18 starts. Hovland again did it with driver as he led the field in driving distance and strokes gained off the tee. He’ll head to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals with a ton of momentum and a great chance of finishing in the top 25 over the course of the four playoff events on that tour. [CBS Sports]

• After Chris Carson reeled off a 17-yard touchdown for the Seahawks in an intrasquad scrimmage this weekend, Carson appears to be holding down the starting spot in Seattle.

Both Carson and (Rashad) Penny showed well on Saturday. They each broke big runs while showing burst and lateral agility to find creases. The two of them appear to be a formidable 1-2 punch in the Seahawks backfield. [Yahoo Sports]

• Short take here on which new coach in the Big 12 will have the most success (early on)

• Good for former Cowboy Arlington Hambright getting snaps with the first team Colorado Buffaloes after going there as a graduate transfer

Non-OSU Bullets

• Really enjoyed Tramel’s Nashville travel blog

• The Thunder have a new assistant named Dave Bliss (not that one) and he sounds great

• Interesting list of what natives of each state are called (thank goodness they didn’t go “Okies”). New Hampshirites!

I know a lot of Thunder fans are bummed about the rebuild but things like this have me super excited to see what Presti does.
