Daily Bullets (Nov. 1) – Mike Boynton in the Big 12, Justice Returns to Waco

One of the Guys

Something I’ve always wondered is how Mike Boynton, a 35-year-old first-time head coach, relates to his peers – a group aged 50-plus years with more accomplishments and pedigree than a stable of Kentucky Derby horses. Well here are Boynton’s comments on adjusting.

“I think I may have told you this. The very first person to reach out to me when I got the job was Lon Kruger. He sent me a text message the Saturday morning after I got announced as the head coach on Friday. I didn’t know any of those other guys, but I knew ‘Huggs’ through Brad (Underwood, Boynton’s predecessor) and they had worked together. Shaka (Smart, Texas’ head coach) and I coached against each other when he was at Clemson and then at Florida when I was at South Carolina.

“These guys have really helped. They have all offered support. We get together the night before we do this. We have our meetings in the spring. A lot of my comfort now comes from what they’ve done to embrace me as a part of the league. That just goes to show you the respect that there is among the coaches here.” [TulsaWorld]

You saw a bit of this camaraderie on Saturday night as Gundy and Tom Herman immediately came to terms just moments after screaming across the field. The Big 12 is a homey place and I tell you what, I’ll be disheartened if/when it breaks up in 2025 or 2050.

Bad News Bears

When OSU went to Waco in 2016, Baylor won and Justice Hill dropped a few balls on the carpet. Neither of those things have happened much since that day.

Saturday, Hill and the Cowboys return to Waco for an 11 a.m. meeting with Baylor. Hill hasn’t fumbled beyond that Sept. 24, 2016, defeat, establishing himself among OSU’s greatest running backs. He ranks eighth in program history in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and yards per attempt.

“We knew he was gonna be a good player, but we just had discussions with him about the importance of protecting the ball,” Gundy said Monday.

“Since then, he’s done a nice job taking care of the ball. He took it serious.”

The Cowboys’ 2-4 record in Waco under Gundy has endured two stadiums and is tied for their second worst in any Big 12 locale, past or present, during his tenure, better than only their 1-5 mark in Norman. [NewsOK]

A true freshman in a cesspool on the road, you’d have to expect some hiccups. We all left that game knowing OSU had found themselves a running back regardless.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Leach on Halloween was pretty great.

With Washington’s seat by his locker still warm, it’s hard to imagine another top-five receiver is already here.

Other than the play being dead multiple times (and holds), this was incredibly impressive.

I know Patterson has to say this but could he be any more wrong?
