Gabe Lemons Breaks Down Oklahoma State Commitment

“It started seventeen years ago,” new Oklahoma State commit Gabe Lemons said explaining how his recruitment came about.

“My dad played at Texas Tech with defensive backs coach Tim Duffie, so they’ve known each other forever. A couple of months ago my coach sent out my season’s highlight reel to a lot of coaches, and Duffie texted my dad and said he showed it to the defensive staff, and he said they really liked it. So they wanted to get me up to camp to see what I could do defensive wise, because most of my film is on offense.

“So the staff came up here [to Coppell High School in Texas] during the spring and watched me play defense because they wanted to see me live, and they were really impressed. So Duffie told my dad that if he could get me to a camp there was a good chance I could get an offer. Duffie invited me to The Show camp last week, went down there and met the coaches face-to-face. Then the next morning after camp they called me back to come up to talk with Gundy, and that’s where they [Gundy] offered me.”

As Lemons points out, the majority of his tape came on the offensive side of the ball where he thrived in the Cowboys’ pass-happy offense.

As a junior he recorded 616 yards through the air and seven touchdowns on just 43 receptions. He was a natural at the position. But he says next year he’ll be transitioning back to playing both ways where Coppell can use his talents as a receiver and corner — especially with his future in Stillwater as a defensive back.

In Lemons, OSU has its first commitment from a true cornerback in the Class of 2018. And a talented one, at that.

Lemons became the 15th member of OSU’s 16-man recruiting class, and is the second cornerback of the class joining athlete Jaelyn Nolan.
