We’re five games into the college basketball season, which means it’s time to obsess over Pomeroy ratings. Right?

Just me? Fine, then.

Here are today’s Pomeroy ratings in scatterplot form.

I’ve done this with F/+ ratings for football. The better your defense is, the closer you are to the “east” side of the chart. The better your offense is, the closer you are to the “north” side of the chart.

I charted all 351 teams in college basketball – all of those blue dots represent a team. I labeled each of the teams in the Big 12 so you can get an early idea of where the teams in our conference stack up.

No surprise: OSU and KU are in their own elite category, with Iowa State and Baylor in the second tier.

Pomeroy currently predicts OSU will finish 26-3 (15-3) with a 1.7% (1 in 59) chance of going undefeated. That is No. 1 seed stuff right there.

who’s the dot in lower left? Looks to be a rough year for them.

That is team #351 in Pomeroy’s standings: Grambing State. They are predicted to go 5-22 this season.

Love it. Nice analysis. You should post this analysis monthly. Great insight.

Love these. Great work Dave. May I request that you also label the blue dots that stand alone? Such as Grambling State, the team to the far right, team to the far left, etc? When I look at that chart I always find myself wondering which teams those are.

Good idea. Will do in future posts.

To satisfy your curiosity, the team on the far right (86.8, 109.3) is Ohio State.

The team on the far left (121.0, 102.9) is Cornell.

The team with the elite offense and average defense (103.5, 120.9) is Duke.

Why hasn’t anyone commented on the fact that Cobbins looks like he’s about to take a Nickelodeon slime bath?
