Nick Piccininni started the Cowboys off well with a very solid win over Princeton’s Pat Glory. Nick picked up the first takedown and load of riding time in the first period. They exchanged a few scores as Glory fought back into the match and went for a takedown late that would’ve tied it. Piccininni scored off it to win 9-5.

Daton Fix dismantled John Erneste with a barrage of takedowns and one turn to pick up a major decision 11-3

Preston Weigel matched up with 11 seed Christian Brunner from Purdue. He made quick work of Brunner with a 58 second fall.

Derek White took on Matt Stencel of Central Michigan. White picked up a well timed take down in the last few seconds of the first period to go up 2-0 heading into the second. He got an escape about 30 seconds into the second and with the knowledge that he was up he fought hands for most of the rest of the match to win 3-1 and move on to the semifinals.

Championships

125-Nick Piccininni DEC Patrick Glory (Princeton) 9-5
133-Daton Fix MAJ DEC John Erneste (Missouri) 11-3
197-Preston Weigel WBF over Christian Brunner (Purdue) :57
285-Derek White vs. Matt Stencel (Central Michigan)

The first round of consolations went perfect for the Cowboys. Kaid Brock and Dakota Geer both looked solid and squeezed out bonus point wins in their matches and Joe and Jacobe Smith both picked up close wins to move on in their brackets.

Consolation #1

141-Kaid Brock MAJ DEC Ian Parker (ISU) 12-4
165-Joe Smith DEC Connor Flynn (Mizzou) 3-1
174-Jacobe Smith DEC Hayden Hastings (Wyoming) 5-3
184-Dakota Geer MAJ DEC Max Lyon (Purdue) 12-2

Kaid Brock started out the second round of consolations with a 10-4 win over Sam Turner. Turner had a win over Brock during the regular season.

Then what looked like it could be a perfect session sort of unraveled for a bit. Joe Smith fell to Big 12 champion Demetrius Romero 7-4 and Jacobe Smith dropped fell 5-2 to the 33 seed Devin Kane out of UNC.

Then Dakota Geer pulls a huge upset over No. 2 seed Shakur Rasheed to get the Cowboys back on track. Late in the match a neutral danger zone takedown is called in Geers favor. It’s challenged by Penn State and the call is confirmed to give Geer the win.

Consolation #2

141-Kaid Brock DEC Sam Turner (Wyoming) 10-4
165-Demetrius Romero(Utah Valley) DEC Joe Smith 704
174-Devin Kane(UNC) DEC Jacobe Smith 5-2
184-Dakota Geer vs. Shakur Rasheed(Penn State) 4-2

The round tonight is big. Naturally the 4 on the championship side all have goals of pushing through to the finals and Brock and Geer are shooting to become All Americans. But there are a lot of points on the board in the team race in this round. If Geer and Brock win their blood-round matches they advance and score 3.5 points for their wins as they advance and score placement points. On the championship side it’s 7 as they receive additional placement points and an advancement point. So every match is really big here.

With Nick Piccininni wrestling an Iowa wrestler and Daton Fix and Preston Weigel wrestling Ohio State wrestlers those matches obviously become a bit more impactful in the team standings.
