Uniforms
Ranking the football uniforms: No. 4
A similar uni to No. 5 comes in at No. 4 and all that’s left is the top three.
I should probably have combined this with No. 5 but I had to break it out on its own because of the new lids.
A closer look at this combo:
Uniform No. 4:Â White (alt.)-White-Black
Worn:Â at Iowa State in 2013
Result(s):Â 1-0 (beat Iowa State 58-27)
How about me having two uniforms OSU has worn at Iowa State in my top four? I’m not sure what to make of that.
While we’re here — I’m not sure there’s a single auxiliary piece of equipment I enjoy more than the orange sleeves under the white jerseys with the black pants.
Justin Gilbert has gone three-quarters with it before and in the ISU game Des Roland went non-traditional with the baggy short sleeves. His undershirt looked like something Phil Mickelson would wear from the early 2000s!
I said earlier today this was an elite combo and the updated helmet only makes it better.
By the way, I agree with Carson that Calvin Barnett was an underrated uni wearer. Not a Uni Heisman candidate but maybe a Uni Nagurski candidate — something along those lines.
I asked Carson Cunningham — a uniform connoisseur himself — to start weighing in on these rankings so you would get a different side of the coin. Here’s his take:
Carson:
Uni Nagurski, I like it. Barnett’s position meant his uniform prowess was largely unrecognized. But the big fellas like to look good, too.
Those sleeves! Doesn’t his XXL orange t-shirt sum up Desmond Roland so well? Nothing flashy, just getting the job done. What shirt is that, I wonder?
Nah.
Speaking of, the orange sleeves are under-utilized. Justin Gilbert’s nearly made Kyle and I pass out in 2011.
This is the better version of No. 5. The updated striped helmet is the best lid, but the combo overall (along with No. 5) should be much lower. Though it’s definitely one of the better road combos, so not an egregious ranking.
I do have a road uni at No. 1, but overall there’s too many (seven, by my count) in your top 10.
