Ranking the football uniforms: No. 7

OSU has gone to the well repeatedly with the uni combo I have ranked No. 7. Twice at Texas and once in Houston against Mississippi State.

A closer look:

Uniform No. 7: Black-White-Black
Worn: at Texas in 2011 and 2013, in Houston vs. Mississippi State in 2013
Result(s): 3-0 (beat Texas 38-13 in 2013, beat Mississippi State 21-3 in 2013, beat Texas 38-26 in 2011)

This combo has seen one fewer win in Austin than every other combo combined in the history of Oklahoma State football — so there’s that.

I love how simple the W-B-W look is. I know I’ve said I don’t love the 1-2-1 look but it works with these for some reason. The orange pops all over the place and you can go with any sleeves-socks combo and make it look good.

This is the second-to-last 1-2-1 uni I ranked and the other (a new one last season, actually) is inside my top three.

I asked Carson Cunningham — a uniform connoisseur himself — to start weighing in on these rankings so you would get a different side of the coin. Here’s his take:

Carson:

I’m a sucker for the 1-2-1 look. So balanced, so clean.

This is my second-favorite road uniform. It shows off one of OSU’s best articles: The matte black helmet, which is perfectly accented with the black pants. This is a mean combo.

It means business. I can see why it’s been worn three times (winning doesn’t hurt, either).

The colored half sleeves (copyright Justin Gilbert) always add to the combo, and these are no different.

While we’re here, one player whose uni prowess was overlooked was Calvin Barnett. The big fella took risks to stand out and they usually worked. Barnett would throw on some orange socks when no one else would. A true innovator.

This was my favorite road combo we saw in 2011, until later that season. B-W-B is one of the strongest combos in the assembly and should be worn annually.
