Recruiting update: Pokes get point guard commit

This version of the PFB recruiting update is headlined by a new commitment for Travis Ford and his already deep 2014 class. With a top hoops target choosing to go elsewhere, the Oklahoma State coaches acted quickly landing the next player on their prospect board.

Along with the new commitment, a pair of signees made headlines, another 2014 basketball offer was sent out, and the second addition was added for Coach Gundy’s 2015 class.

 Tyree Griffin, 3-star 5’10 165 pound PG from New Orleans, Louisiana (Rivals, 247)

The 5th commitment of the 2014 class comes by way of NOLA. With Griffin’s commitment, Associate Head Coach Butch Pierre adds to his Louisiana-Stillwater pipeline that includes Markel Brown and Brian Williams. Griffin chose Oklahoma State over Texas A&M and UTEP.

JaQuan Lyle, 5-Star 6’5 215 pound PG from Huntington Prep in West Virginia (ESPN, Rivals, Scout, 247)

The Pokes lost out on one of their top targets this week with Lyle choosing Oregon over Memphis and OSU.

MJ Rhett, 6’8 238 pound PF from Tennessee State (TSU)

The 5th year transfer is getting loads of offers from the big boys and Oklahoma State is one of them.

Jeff Newberry, 3-star 6’2 185 pound PG from New Mexico JC (ESPN, Rivals, 247)

Despite Newberry’s great play, his team fell in the 2nd round of the NJCAA Tournament. Newberry had 31 points in 22 minutes in a double OT loss to Indian Hills Community College. (NJCAA)

“I’m just ready to step in and be the next point guard, do what Marcus is doing,” Newberry said. “I’m not going to let the fans down. I’m going to come in and work hard. I’m ready to go.” (Tulsa World)

Joe Burton, 4-star 6’6 205 pound SF from Humble, Texas (ESPN, Rivals, Scout, 247)

The OSU signee was named All-Area Player of the Year. (The Observer)

Johnny Wilson, 3-star 6’4 295 pound OT from Midland, Texas (ESPN, Rivals, Scout, 247)

Wilson follows QB John Kolar to become the 2nd commit of the 2015 football class.
