Fall Camp Update: Mike Gundy Gives Update on QB Depth Chart

During media availability for the final day of Oklahoma State’s fall football camp, Mike Gundy put forth Oklahoma State’s current depth chart at quarterback.

Dru Brown, the graduate transfer from Hawaii, has been tabbed as QB2 ahead of incoming Mr. Texas Football, Spencer Sanders, and Keondre Wudtee, in that order.

“Well it’s Dru; Dru is the backup,” Gundy said. “Spencer is just a little bit behind him due to maturity. So, we’ve got them as one, two, three right now, and Keondre is at the four.

“(Brown is), I think, just 22 years old. He’s got 25 games under his belt at this level. He’s had a lot of reps, and experience is very important. He’s much more comfortable just being out into the speed of the game.”

Taylor Cornelius has been “the guy” since spring practice according to Gundy. But given his lack of in-game experience and with the talent behind him, the pecking order from No. 2 and down is all the more intriguing as the Cowboys close in on their last week before the season opener.

Brown, the last of the quarterbacks to arrive on campus, brings two years of starting experience. No other OSU signal callers have any.

Brown came in third in the Mountain West last year, slinging it for 2,785 yards and 18 scores to eight interceptions, and gained two more TDs on the ground.

This means that Spencer Sanders is the No. 3 (!) option at quarterback, but that’s far from a knock when you consider what he lacks in experience compared to Cornelius and Brown. Hopefully, that means the Cowboys are even more talent-heavy at QB than we thought.

“Taylor has been in there doing it for three years,” Gundy said. “That’s a very knowledgeable room, and obviously Mike (Yurcich) is very intelligent, and does a good job of getting the information to the guys. They can learn more than they even think they can just being in that room.

“Taylor knows this offense as well as anybody that’s ever been here. He’s a valuable asset to a guy like Dru and Spencer.”
