The Pokes survived the first round of cuts by 2022 tight end recruit Jason Llewellyn on Thursday.

Llewellyn, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound prospect widely regarded as one of the best players at his position, named OSU along with Baylor, OU, Texas, Texas Tech and TCU from the Big 12 as his up-to-date top schools. Auburn, Arkansas, Michigan and Ole Miss were among those who also made the cut.

Llewellyn cast a pretty wide net by dropping a top 15 and thus eliminating only six schools, but OSU advancing to the next round for a player this talented isn’t something to take for granted. He’s not ranked at 247Sports and only a three-star at Rivals, but the flurry of schools to frantically join the mix in recent months speaks volumes about his potential. Only three of his current offers came before the 2021 calendar year!

Tight end in the 2022 cycle for OSU looks like it’ll be a position where OSU is going to be selective, too, so that may be a draw for Llewellyn and reason to believe if you’re an OSU coach that you have a real chance despite the crowded race to land his services. He’s just the fourth player in the cycle at tight end to be offered, joining fellow Texas standouts Donovan Green and Trent McGaughey as well as in-state standout Andre Dollar. McGaughey and Llewellyn are the only of those four to have not committed.

As a junior last season for Aledo, Llewellyn played a huge role in leading the team to its second consecutive state title, catching 28 passes on the year for 453 yards and scoring five times as a go-to playmaker in the red zone.

OSU signed just one tight end in its last recruiting cycle with Austin Jarrard but lost one to the transfer portal this offseason with Jelani Woods transferring to Virginia.
