The Five Highest-Scoring Bedlams: 2017 Was a Loss, But it was a Memorable Chapter in the Rivalry
In what was dubbed the best quarterback duel in college football, points were more common than tackles it seemed, and in fact, that was almost true.
Bedlam has had its cut of exciting, high-scoring games, but 2017 set the record with a 62-52 final and almost 1,500 yards from Stillwater on Saturday. Here is a look at how this Bedlam compared with some of the other track meets in the rivalry’s 112-game history.
Note: OSU scored just 44 point in the first 20 Bedlam games. They almost matched that number in the first half on Saturday.
5. 2010: 47-41, Oklahoma (88 points, 967 yards)
With Big 12 title implications riding on the game, the Bedlam quarterbacks combined for six interceptions.
Brandon Weeden was just one touchdown short of a victory, unable to match Landry’s Jones’ three scores through the air. There were 105 pass attempts in this edition, but Weeden just couldn’t find the deep ball, finishing under 300 yards.
OSU’s non-offensive scores kept the game close. Shaun Lewis ran 52 yards the other way for a pick-6, and with less than three minutes to go, Justin Gilbert took a kickoff 89 yards to the house. Ahh, the good old days of special teams.
4. 1977: 61-28, Oklahoma (89 points)
This one was ugly.
Coming off a road Bedlam win in 1976, OSU got the Sooners at home with a chance to win back-to-back Bedlams for only the fourth time. Instead, OU came into Stillwater and pasted the Cowboys.
The Sooners were No. 3 in the nation at that point, which marked the seventh straight year OSU had to play a top-three OU team.
3. 2012: 51-48 (OT), Oklahoma (99 points, 1,108 yards)
OSU got out to a 14-0 start and ended up winning the turnover battle 2-1, but Jones’ arm was just robotic, throwing it 71 times for 500 yards and three scores. Even with four touchdowns from Joseph Randle, the Cowboys just couldn’t keep up.
Josh Stewart was everywhere, finishing with 11 catches for 150 yards and a score. It just came down to a field goal vs. a touchdown in overtime. It would have been OSU’s first win in Norman since 2001. Instead, the Cowboys had to wait a couple more years for Bob Stoops to punt it twice.
2. 2008: 61-41, Oklahoma (102 points, 1,009 yards)
Sam Bradford’s Sooners vs. Zac Robinson’s Cowboys.
Jermaine Greshman and Dez Bryant both had pretty monster days, both scoring twice. On the ground, Kendall Hunter carried the load, but for OU, Chris Brown and Demarco Murray split reps and just wore the OSU defense out.
The Cowboys lost the turnover battle, which helped propel OU to a 17-0 finish in the final seven minutes.
1. 2017: 62-52, Oklahoma (114 points, 1,446 yards)
Baker Mayfield has more Bedlam wins than Mike Gundy, but this game will never be forgotten in Bedlam history.
OSU came into it favored, but Mayfield cemented himself as the Heisman Trophy front-runner by some distance after outgunning Mason Rudolph and Co.
Justice Hill ran for a Bedlam record 228 yards, topping OSU’s only Heisman winner from 1988, and though James Washington was held out for most of the second half, he still finished his final Bedlam with seven catches for 128 yards and a 51-yard score.
