Instacap: OSU Downs UT-Rio Grande Valley 102-83 in Non-Con Finale
Oklahoma State moved to 10-2 with a 102-83 win over UT-Rio Grande Valley (6-8) in a game that was never in doubt. The Cowboys flexed their defensive muscle forcing 19 turnovers, and really away from the Vaqueros using flashes of their recently-installed spread offense.
The Cowboys emerged from a four-game shooting slump to score a season-high 102 points. And they did it of the hot hands of Jeffrey Carroll (8 of 13) and Kendall Smith (7 of 10). The duo combined for 40 points.
Mitchell Solomon chipped in for 11 points while going just 2-for-2 from the field but was 7 of 8 from the charity stripe. He grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists. Tavarius Shine had 12 on 3-of-8 shooting and had three of the Cowboys 12 steals.
The Vaqueros were led by Xavier McDaniel Jr. with 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting. The son of former Seattle Supersonics All-Star also grabbed five boards and dished out two assists. Senior Nick Dixon added 14 points on 4-of-12 shooting, three assists and three steals.
Oklahoma State went on a 14-2 run midway through the first half and UTRGV was never able to recover. The Cowboys took a 53-34 lead into halftime and held on to tie the second half 49-all and complete the blowout.
Next up, the Cowboys welcome No. 10 West Virginia to the Gallagher-Iba Arena on December 29 for the Big 12 opener.
