Mike Stoops Out as OU’s Defensive Coordinator
A day after allowing 48 points to rival Texas, OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops finds himself jobless.
The Football Brainiacs first reported the news of Stoops’ ouster. The Oklahoman and Tulsa World also confirmed the news.
Stoops served on OU’s staff since 2012 and was a holdover on the coaching staff of his brother, Bob’s, regime. Under Lincoln Riley, who took over last year, Stoops didn’t last two full seasons.
OU’s defense is 89th in total defense, and ranked 43rd nationally in yards per play through Week 6, nine spots ahead of OSU’s defense. With Stoops out, it’s unclear who could take over. But current OU staffer Bob Diaco could be a natural successor. Assistant head coach Ruffin McNeill, who has extensive previous experience as a defensive coordinator, could also be a name OU considers.
