OSU Wrestling: Incoming Freshman Colt Newton Wrestled Senior Season with Two Torn Labrums
Newton held off surgery until after senior season.
The Oklahoma All-State wrestling matches were contested on Wednesday night at Sand Springs High School. Two incoming OSU freshmen, Reece Witcraft and Price Perrier, competed with Witcraft dominating his way to a 22-7 tech fall and Perrier falling 3-0.
One notable omission from the duals on Wednesday was Colt Newton. Newton was announced to the Large West team a few months ago at 132 and was slated to compete against fellow Cowboy Reece Witcraft.
Here’s why.
The three-time state finalist out of Choctaw suffered a torn labrum in both his shoulder and his hip during his senior season! The injury to his hip occurred early in the year and his shoulder mid-season. Newton elected to finish out the year before having surgery just after the state tournament.
If you followed much of Newton’s high school career you were probably hoping for a bit of a breakout senior season. He was a big time talent as a youth wrestler and a state finalist in all three seasons from his freshman to junior year. In his junior year he split with Witcraft, who was ranked as high as No. 1 in the country at his weight this season, and is a consensus top 30 pound-for-pound recruit according to most recruiting outlets. That breakout year for Newton never really got off the ground after his hip injury.
Newton is a guy that has always seemed right on the edge of breaking through to another tier. Naturally that wasn’t going to happen with two torn labrums. It will be interesting to follow how he bounces back after his surgeries, but it’s certainly conceivable that he after some healing and recovery he could be a big asset going forward.
Newton hopes to be cleared to wrestle again in the November/December time frame.
