Porter’s Notebook: Oklahoma State-Iowa State

Three guys had their first-ever picks on Saturday.

The 10 thoughts are fresh out of the oven right here, but I wanted to empty out my notebook on this totally normal and not at all weird day in the Big 12. Join me as I walk you through the notes I took during the OSU-Iowa State game on Saturday.

• This sums up the season.

• Given OSU’s inability to recruit a brother other than the other Harper kid, Charlie Kolar lighting up these Pokes would be perfecto (update: It was).

• Moar. Braydon. Johnson.

• Iowa State literally cannot tackle Tylan Wallace.

• One of my favorite games is finding OSU folks on the sideline during games. There’s Holder. There’s Scott Verplank. There’s Mrs. Holder. There’s Kyle Wray in his duster!

• Sanders needs to set his feet better. Not when he’s on the run, but he’s rarely set when he’s in the pocket. Always bobbing around, which leaves his throws vulnerable. Should have been picked early on one of them.

• Marshall hollered earlier this week about how Breece Hall might be a dude. No longer a “might be” for me.

• It’s tough watching another Big 12 team use a big TE up the seam to light up an opposing defense. (Update: OSU did it, too).

• Amazing take from Lee Cothran in the Chamber right here: Bernie Sanders taking out ad time on YouTube TV is knowing your audience… Bernie Sanders taking out ad time during an Iowa State – Oklahoma State football game is not knowing your audience.

• Anybody know if “shock” is a brand or a customization for No. 30?

• “We’re not talking about Michael Vick when we’re talking about Purdy running.” I laughed. Need more jokes from broadcasting crews.

• Why is Iowa State running the Wildclone but with a QB offset. Isn’t the purpose of that formation to get an extra blocker for the runner?

• If you would have showed me a still shot of every KHP play in the first half approximately 0.5 seconds before the ball arrived at its destination, I would have said he ended the game with at least six interceptions.

• I love Chuba on 3rd- and 4th-and-short if the box isn’t totally stacked. Like, with multiple WRs out wide. If get avoids the first wave, it’s over.

• At what point are helmets just one big sticker?

• Lol at this.

• Tom Hutton was wearing his “I’m from Australia and had never heard of Ames, Iowa until about a week ago” sleeves and tights today.

• The ability to go over the middle is invaluable. Iowa State put it on display on that end-of-first-half drive when Purdy repeatedly went at the heart of OSU’s defense. OSU either can’t or won’t do it (probably the former), and it limits them offensively.

• How many intentional groundings did it seem like Purdy had in the first half? There were at least three that I started looking around the shed on.

• There were no flags in the first 29 minutes. A Gundy dream.

• What a world.

• In one half!

• How scared were you guys when Metcalf went under center to start the second half?

• I wish you could bottle and sell how badly I wanted Gundy to hand his shades to the ref here.

• There’s not much I hate more than I hate running Sanders on a keeper to the short side of the field with Chuba right next to him. Like … why?

• A great take.

• I didn’t like kicking to make it 24-20. I thought they should have gone for it even if Ammendola is all of the money.

• I saw two grad assistants holding up a curtain behind a coach giving signals to the QB on the ISU sideline. The curtain had a Toyota sponsorship printed on it. #amateurathletics!

• Good blocking here.

• When you get to Chuba before he gets going, he’s much easier to tackle. Well yeah.

• I love how Iowa State uses Breece as a safety valve when he goes in motion to the long side of the field on a pass play. How scary would OSU be if Chuba did that?

• Just realized during the 4th quarter today that Baylor is all alone in first place in the Big 12. Not great!

• I wonder how often in a Power 5-Power 5 game one team has run twice as many plays as the other team. Didn’t happen in this one, but it got close in the 4th as ISU neared 80 and OSU was on 43. Ended 88-55. Looked it up later, and TCU doubled up OSU in 2015 to the tune of 110-53, which is just astonishing.

• Sanders had Chu on this third down. Gotta make that throw. Got to.

• The interceptions by Cowboys Malcolm Rodriguez, Amen Ogbongbemiga and Tre Sterling were all the first of their careers. Has to be the first time this has ever happened to three different guys in the same game in OSU history.

• OSU took 11 offensive snaps on Iowa State’s side of the 50. Eight in the third, three in the fourth. This feels impossible. Did this really happen?

• Here are the TO totals in the Knowles era sorted by most TO. You can put this one at the top with Texas.

• Did you know OSU had lost six straight Big 12 road games coming into this one? In reverse order: Tech, Texas, TCU, OU, Baylor, Kansas State.

• Trace Ford became the first true freshman to start this year. Appropriate.

• I love Kasey Dunn’s hat here. May have bought it in 2013.

• OSU is (somehow) 8-3 in its last 11 games against top-25 opponents. Again, this feels impossible.

• OSU now has 15 plays of 50+ yards on the season. Coming into today, only six other teams had 10 or more, and OSU had the most with 12 before adding three in Ames.

• At 1,381 yards, Chuba now has the 15th-best season by a RB in OSU history. There are four (probably five) games left.
