Alex Dieringer Finishes with a Bronze at the Pan American Championships

Alex Dieringer was originally scheduled to compete at the Pan American Championships at 92 KG. A late weight change was announced and the Cowboy dropped to the Olympic weight of 86 KG to replace Pat Downey who was originally announced as the rep.

The former Cowboy and three-time NCAA champion dominated his way to the semifinals. In his first match he had this quick first period fall over Venezuela.

In his next bout he knocked off former UNC Tarheel Ethan Ramos 9-2 before he matched up with Cuba’s Yurieski Torreblanca Queralta. These Pan Am tournaments tend to largely be decided between the Cubans and the Americans and this weight was no exception.

This one was decided with no actual offensive points. Dieringer was put on the shot clock in the first and unable to score. He was down 1-0 going into the second when Torreblanca was put on the shot clock and did not score. With the bout tied 1-1, Dieringer was put on the shot clock again, was unable to score and fell 2-1.

He bounced back nicely in the Bronze medal match with this 11-1 tech fall over Colombia.

With David Taylor set to rep the United States for the Pan Am games in a few weeks, this will likely be Dieringer’s last tournament before the 2020 Olympic trials April 4-5 he will try and snag his first Olympic team berth.
