The Open Mat Releases First Preseason Rankings
Daton Fix No. 1 at 133
Though we still really have no idea whether or not we’ll have a wrestling season next year, Open Mat released one of the first preseason wrestling rankings for the 2020-21 season.
Here’s how things shook out for the Cowboys:
| Weight | Wrestler | Rank |
| 125 | Unranked | Unranked |
| 133 | Daton Fix | 1 |
| 141 | Kaid Brock | 7 |
| 149 | Boo Lewallen | 4 |
| 157 | Wyatt Sheets | 9 |
| 165 | Travis Wittlake | 4 |
| 174 | Unranked | Unranked |
| 184 | Anthony Montalvo | 8 |
| 197 | Dakota Geer | 11 |
| 285 | Unranked | Unranked |
| Team | Oklahoma State | 4 |
The Cowboys were ranked at seven of the 10 weights and No. 4 as a team. The highest ranked wrestler is Daton Fix at No. 1, and the lowest is Dakota Geer at No. 11. This lineup projection is slightly different than mine which shakes out with Fix at 125, Brock at 133, and Hone/Gfeller at 141.
The No. 4 ranking would result in a team trophy for the Cowboys, but the shift at the lower weights with Brock and Fix going down would result in more projected points, as would the potential addition of Shawn Streck at heavyweight, who’s been rumored as a potential addition to the roster next season.
There is also the potential that we see true freshman Dustin Plott as the starter at 174. He has prep wins over Carter Starocci and Kaleb Romero, who are ranked sixth and fourth at that weight, respectively.
