Bryce Thompson’s Commitment Could Help OSU Land Another Key Transfer

Dominoes are falling throughout college basketball. Here’s what has happened over the last two days alone: Five-star Patrick Baldwin Jr. committed to Milwaukee over Duke. TyTy Washington bumped his commitment date up, picking Kentucky. And Bryce Thompson is heading to Oklahoma State via Kansas.

That’s three prospects landing at three schools. Those last two I mentioned could be key in how OSU finishes off its class.

TyTy was initially expected to make his decision on Saturday. All signs pointed to Kentucky. In the meantime, Georgia point guard transfer Sahvir Wheeler looked to be a Kentucky lock, too.

Then TyTy committed Wednesday, days ahead of schedule, effectively calling dibs on the starting PG job at Kentucky. Whether it affects Wheeler’s final decision is unclear.

What is clear is that OSU has gotten exceedingly more appealing as a destination for Wheeler in the last 24 hours. OSU still needs a true point guard to run next to Bryce and Avery Anderson. Meanwhile, Kentucky has a true point and a crowded backcourt.

If Wheeler wants a clear path to a starting job, that path is likely through Stillwater, not Lexington. Maybe he’s fine taking a backup gig. It’s Kentucky, after all. But stepping into a role last played by Cade Cunningham? On a team that just landed a five-star in Bryce Thompson, and returns five of its six leading scorers?

That’s an appeal that just might, maybe, give OSU a puncher’s chance to win Wheeler’s services over Kentucky.
