OSU Forward Woody Newton Has Entered the Transfer Portal

The next domino has fallen in what has already been a significant offseason reboot of Mike Boynton’s roster.

Oklahoma State guard Woody Newton has entered the transfer portal as of Monday. He is the fourth member of OSU’s 2022-23 roster to do so.

After spending one season at Syracuse, Newton transferred to OSU where he’s seen an increased role over the previous two seasons. After averaging 2.1 points and 7.5 minutes in 17 games the year before, Newton averaged 17 minutes per game in 29 games, starting 13 for the Cowboys this past season. He scored 4.3 points and grabbed 3.4 rebounds per game, but was valuable as the Cowboys only scoring option and defender who could play both outside and inside.

The Cowboys are losing most of their experienced bigs.

Also transferring are Mousse Cisse and Kalib Boone, and with Bernard Kouma having exhausted his eligibility, that means that Tyreek Smith is the only Cowboy 6-foot-6 or taller that still could return. Smith has yet to announce whether he’ll return for next season or not.

The Cowboys are bringing in some size as part of their 2023 signing class with Brandon Garrison (6-9) and Eric Dailey and Justin McBride (both 6-7), but that means asking true freshmen to shoulder the burden down low.
