The Yukon native starred on both sides of the ball for OSU, hitting .335 and recording a 3.16 ERA this past season. He was an All-American this season and was a two-time All-Big 12 selection.
This past season, Benge ranked second in the Big 12 with 72 runs (behind only teammate Zach Erhard). He also finished T-3rd in home runs (18), T-3rd in RBIs (64), third in doubles (24) and fourth in slugging percentage. Benge went 3-2 on the mound this past season with 44 strikeouts and was 5-4 over two years at OSU. He’s projected as an outfielder at the next level.
Benge is the 20th Cowboy selected in the first round, and the highest selected since Andrew Heaney was taken ninth overall by Miami. Fellow Cowboy Nolan McLean, another two-way star, was drafted by the Mets in the third round last season.
A roundup of the draft projections showed several outlets predicted Benge to go in the high teens.
