Gunnar Gundy took his Hornets on the road Saturday night and got a win against the No. 4 team in Division-II.

Emporia State is 3-0 this season after the Hornets went to No. 4 Pittsburg State and beat the Gorillas 24-21. Gundy threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns while running for another 36 yards and a score. It was the Hornets’ first win in Pittsburg since 2016 and the highest-ranked team the Hornets have beaten since 2003.

In his first three games at Emporia State, Gundy has completed 65% of his passes for 761 yards and seven touchdowns. If sacks didn’t count against a quarterback’s rushing stats, Gundy would also be the Hornets’ leading rusher, but he’s still second on the team in the stat, having ran for 146 yards and a score.

That win against Pitt State was Emporia State’s second ranked win of the season after the Hornets bested then-No. 24 Angelo State 17-12 last weekend. The Hornets were up to No. 21 entering Saturday’s game, so they should get another boost in the next poll. Other ranked teams on the Hornets’ schedule are No. 25 Fort Hays State (Nov. 2) and No. 2 Central Missouri (Nov. 9).

Gunnar, son of Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, spent three seasons at OSU, where he took part in nine games. In that stretch, Gundy threw for 449 yards and four touchdowns while running for 120 yards and another score. He entered the transfer portal on the tail end of last season but still played in OSU’s Texas Bowl win against Texas A&M, where Gundy had a 10-yard touchdown run.

In his first game with Emporia State (the Hornets’ only game against an unranked foe thus far), Gundy dominated Washburn, throwing for 292 yards and three touchdowns while running for another 99 yards. It’ll be fun to see just how far Gundy and these Hornets can go.
