Garret Rangel Starts at Quarterback for Oklahoma State against Cougars
The Cowboys hand the keys to the redshirt sophomore.
The Cowboys have a new quarterback running the show in Provo.
Garret Rangel took tarting quarterback duties from Alan Bowman for Oklahoma State’s game against BYU on Friday night. This comes after OSU started Big 12 play at 0-3, and Rangel came in for Bowman in two of those games.
Through OSU’s first six games, Bowman completed 59% of his passes for 1,653 yards, 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Across the Cowboys’ 0-3 start to Big 12 play, Bowman is 52-for-102 (51%) for 686 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions. Bowman’s season yardage total ranks 18th nationally, which is good for fourth in the Big 12, but his eight interceptions are tied for the second-most in the Big 12. His six INTs in Big 12 play are tied for the most in the conference.
A 6-foot-2, 205-pound redshirt sophomore from Frisco, Texas, Rangel has thrown 24 passes this season, completing 11 (46%). He has 141 yards, one touchdown and no picks. In his most recent outing, Rangel threw five passes after coming in for Bowman against West Virginia. Rangel went 4-for-5 for 75 yards and a touchdown in that game.
Rangel came to Stillwater as part of the Cowboys’ 2022 recruiting class. Out of Frisco Lone Star, Rangel was a four-star recruit, according to On3 and ESPN, with the former tabbing him as the No. 232 player in the class. Along with his offer to OSU, he also held offers to Utah, Houston, Virginia Tech, Northwestern and others.
He was thrown into the fire shortly after arriving in Stillwater. Spencer Sanders was injured after a strong start to that 2022 season. Rangel made three starts and played in four games as a true freshman. He made his first career start on the road against Kansas that season. The Cowboys lost that game, as the Jayhawks claimed bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008. Rangel threw for 304 yards in that game, though, which ranked as the seventh-most by a freshman in a game in program history. It was the most passing yards by a Cowboy freshman since Wes Lunt threw for 324 against TCU in 2012.
Rangel finished his true freshman season having completed 51% of his 115 attempts for 711 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.
Rangel started his redshirt freshman season in a three-quarterback rotation with Bowman and Gunnar Gundy. Rangel started the season-opener against Central Arkansas, completing 67% of his passes for 118 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He then threw a crucial touchdown in OSU’s 27-15 Week 2 win against Arizona State. OSU would lose its next game to South Alabama, where Rangel threw just five passes before the staff handed Bowman the keys to the offense for the remainder of the season. Rangel finished the 2023 season having completed 53% of his attempts for 172 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
OSU will be without a quarterback, as well, as The Oklahoman‘s Scott Wright reported earlier Friday that redshirt freshman Zane Flores will miss the remainder of the season after a surgery.
