Superlatives: Game MVPs, Top Plays and More from Oklahoma State’s Loss to BYU
From a thriller
It was a long night that ended in heartbreak for the Cowboys.
Oklahoma State lost to No. 13 BYU 38-35 on Friday night after nearly pulling off the upset in Provo, Utah. Here are superlatives from what was a wild game.
Offensive MVP: Garret Rangel
Ollie Gordon would have been the easy answer here after rushing for 107 yards and finding the end zone three times. But Gordon does not have that production if not for Rangel, who got the start at QB and whose own running ability opened up the offense for the Cowboys. Rangel played only the first half before being injured at the end of a 54-yard run. When Rangel exited, Gordon had 78 rushing yards, meaning Gordon notched 72.8% of his rushing total while Rangel was controlling the offense. Ultimately, Rangel was 6-of-9 for 51 yards, a TD, an INT and ran for 77 yards.
Defensive MVP: Parker Robertson
Missing three of its best defensive players because of injury, OSU needed someone to step up. Robertson, a former walk-on, was the man to do that at safety. He wrangled in 11 tackles, which tied with Kobe Hylton for the team-high. Robertson also had an interception and broke up a pass.
Stat of the Game: 269
OSU’s offense finally ran the ball like we all expected going into this season with 269 rushing yards against a solid run defense. That rushing total was OSU’s best by far this season. The next highest was 149 Week 1 against South Dakota State, which was also the last time Ollie Gordon surpassed the century mark.
