OSU Baseball: Cowboys Lose 11-1 in Bedlam

STILLWATER — After only a handful of at-bats, the Sooners had enough runs to beat the Cowboys on Tuesday night, and it got worse for the Pokes from there.

Oklahoma beat Oklahoma State 11-1 in eight innings at O’Brate Stadium. It was OU’s second win against the Cowboys in the teams’ past seven meetings, but with how each team’s season has gone to this point, it’s hard to call Tuesday’s result an upset. The Cowboys fall to 16-18 with the loss while the No. 12 Sooners sit at 26-10 on the year.

“Definitely not enough, probably, execution in any phase,” OSU coach Josh Holliday said. “… Really no one phase of the game where we were as competitive as necessary to win the game, pure and simple.”

It started early, as the Sooners plated five in a first inning that also featured a pair of OSU errors. OU’s first four batters recorded hits, which already gave the Sooners a 2-0 lead. That lead was up to 5-0 four at-bats later.

OSU’s lone run came in the fourth inning off a Colin Brueggemann home run to right field. That cut OU’s lead to 6-1 after the Sooners tallied another run in the top of that inning.

The eighth inning was just as poor as the first for the Pokes. OU scored five runs in the frame before OSU was able to record an out, and after holding off the Cowboys in the bottom of the inning, the game was over via run rule.

The Cowboys were 4-for-28 (.143) at the plate. They were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The defense wasn’t much better. OSU used seven pitchers who combined to give up the 11 runs off 11 hits, and OSU had three errors on the day.

OSU returns to Big 12 play this weekend with a three-game series against Houston. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in O’Brate Stadium.

“We don’t like where we’re at right now, so I could totally understand if the people that follow the team either,” Holliday said. “But if you love the team, and you love your school, and you love these kids, keep supporting. That’s all any of us can do. They’re at the age and they’re in a space where that can really, really help them. So, obviously if you love the team, that’s a great way to help the team right now.

“But yeah, there’s gonna be people that are frustrated for sure, and I understand that. Nobody’s more frustrated about it than I am. But we take responsibility for it. I take 100% responsibility for everything that goes on here.”
