Oklahoma State Quarterback Garret Rangel Entering Transfer Portal
OSU is down to two QBs.
STILLWATER — Oklahoma State’s quarterback competition appears to be getting easier by the day.
On Wednesday night CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz broke news that Oklahoma State quarterback Garret Rangel plans to enter the transfer portal. The news comes two days after Maealiauaki Smith entered the transfer portal.
On Saturday fans and the media got the chance to see all four quarterbacks in action during the Orange and White Game. Rangel started for the Orange team and finished 5-of-6 for 48 yards. Although his day was efficient, circumstances surrounding his playing time were less than ideal as has been the case for most of his career.
Rangel’s transfer would leave Oklahoma State’s quarterback race down to Zane Flores and TCU transfer Hauss Hejny. Neither of them have attempted a pass at the collegiate level.
Rangel was the competition’s most experienced quarterback completing 93-of-180 passes for 1,075 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions across 13 career games. He also rushed for 107 additional yards on 41 carries.
A four-star recruit in the 2022 class, Rangel chose OSU over offers from Houston, Virginia Tech, Northwestern and others. He was thrown into the fire early, playing in four games as a true freshman after Spencer Sanders went down with injury. In that time, he threw for 711 yards and four touchdowns.
Rangel was part of the three-quarterback rotation of 2023 and played in five games that season. He went 17-for-32 for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
After Alan Bowman struggled this past season, Rangel was called into action against Utah and West Virginia before starting OSU’s trip to Provo. He had the Cowboys in a good spot against the Cougars but broke his collarbone shortly before halftime, ending his season.
“It was definitely tough,” said Rangel earlier this spring. “It was really tough. My career has been up and down here. Just to have my shot — my true shot — been playing good, we were rolling, and then I’m out. Definitely tough for anybody to go through that, but I know I can handle anything. But it was tough, yeah.”
