OSU Golf: Fang, Stout Win Big Tournaments on Same Day
The Cowboys stayed hot even after the college season ended.
The college season might be over, but Cowboy golf has yet to cool off.
Rising juniors Ethan Fang and Preston Stout each hoisted a trophy on Saturday, with Fang winning the Amateur Championship in Sandwich, England and Stout winning the Northeast Amateur in Rhode Island.
Starting with Fang, who transferred to OSU from Cal ahead of this past national championship-winning season. He became the first OSU golfer to win the Amateur Championship since Bob Dickson back in 1967.
Fang was in a battle with Gavin Tiernan at Royal St. George’s. It came down to the final hole, where Fang birdied for a 1-up victory that earned him entry into the 153rd Open, next year’s U.S. Open, The Masters and a DP World Tour event.

“I was hitting it good all day and I knew that if I stayed in it some putts would drop,” Fang said. “He hit two really good shots and with it all tied on the last anything could happen, but I knew if I just birdied I could get the job done.
“I’m glad I can take a second to think about everything I’ve done this week and just enjoy it.”
Then at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, Rhode Island, Stout cruised to victory after a final-round 65 that saw him beat the field by eight strokes. He matched the course record with a 61 on Thursday.
Peter Uihlein is the only other Cowboy to win the Northeast Amateur, doing so in 2011.
This adds to a stellar few months for the Cowboys, who won a national title at the end of May despite fielding a team of five underclassmen. OSU closed the college season by winning the Haskins Award Invitational, the Mountaineer Invitational, the Big 12 Championship, their NCAA Regional and the NCAA Championship. Not bad for a group that can return everyone not only next season but the season after that.
