Bill Self Hospitalized for Heart Procedure
“He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.”
Bill Self was hospitalized and underwent a heart procedure on Thursday, according to a release from KU.
“Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms Thursday,” the release said. “He was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he had two stents inserted. The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.”
An Oklahoma State alum, Self is heading into his 23rd season in Lawrence where he’s amassed a 624-156 record (.800) and won two national championships (2008 and 2022). He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. The Jayhawks have not missed an NCAA Tournament under his watch other than the 2020 season which was shortened due to Covid-19.
Prior to his time with the Jayhawks, he had head coaching jobs at Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois. He played at Oklahoma State from 1982-85 under Paul Hansen and then spent times on the Cowboys’ staff under Leonard Hamilton and Eddie Sutton.
