Zac Robinson and his Atlanta Falcons are getting ready to host Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, but in the lead up to a big game, Robinson was asked Thursday about his candidacy for the vacant job at his alma mater.

Robinson, the Falcons’ offensive coordinator, was asked if Oklahoma State had contacted him.

“I’ll kind of leave that,” Robinson said. “But, honestly, just focused on today and progressing this week.”

As Robinson has climbed the NFL coaching ladder, many Oklahoma State fans fantasized about a day when the former Cowboy quarterback would return home in the post-Mike Gundy era. It was thought of as a way-in-the-future idea, as Gundy was leading the Cowboys to the Fiesta Bowl after the 2021 season. But a Robinson return all of a sudden started to seem a little more realistic after the Cowboys went 3-9 last season and Gundy and OSU were in a reported “standoff” about Gundy’s future. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported last December that Robinson was “the school’s top choice” to replace Gundy had that situation gone differently.

Fast forward less than a year, and Gundy was fired midseason, and the Cowboys are looking for a coach. Robinson’s name is still hot among fans and media.

The Falcons hired Robinson as their OC ahead of the 2024 season when Raheem Morris got Atlanta’s head job. Morris was the Rams’ DC, where Robinson was the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Last week, Morris fielded a similar question on Robinson’s candidacy in Stillwater.

“I want my guys to go be head coaches,” Morris said. “I think I said that at my opening press conference. We want to have the ability to go out here and make people want our guys and want our people. And I think that is awesome for him, something that’s awesome for his family. But we live in that world, and we embrace distractions that are trying to duck those things.

“I don’t know if he’s been contacted from anybody from Oklahoma State, but we heard the rumors, and that’s great for him. I was fortunate enough to be a part of those rumors when I was an assistant for those years, and those are all really good moments for us in this profession.”

The question Robinson was asked Thursday was actually the second time in his media session that Oklahoma State was brought up. Robinson was asked a question about Bijan Robinson, where Robinson recalled a time the Rams were on a bye week, and he was in Stillwater for an OSU game against Texas.

In his second season as the Falcon’s play-caller, Robinson leads an offense that ranks 15th in the NFL in yards per play. Atlanta’s 136.5 rush yards a game, which ranks sixth in the league.
