Cowgirl Hoops: The Three Most Ridiculous Stats from OSU’s Exhibition Win against Oklahoma Christian
The Cowgirls rolled in their exhibition against OCU.
Jacie Hoyt’s Cowgirls beat the bricks off Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Oklahoma State won 104-51. For the math deficient like myself (used a calculator), OSU won by 53 points.
I’m well aware OCU isn’t a world-beater. It’s a Division-II school that was picked 12th in the Lone Start Conference this year. But with a score line that crazy, I wanted to highlight a few of the most ridiculous stats from Tuesday night — aside from the points scored, that is.
1. Jadyn Wooten’s 13 Assists
The Cowgirls’ sophomore point guard was flirting with a triple-double, finishing the night with 19 points, seven rebounds and 13 assists. Equally as impressive is that she had those 13 dimes while turning the ball over only once.
Wooten is coming off a fantastic freshman season where she averaged 6.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists a game while coming off the bench all year. Her season-high for assists in a game last year was seven, a feat she accomplished twice: against Chicago State and Arizona State.
2. Stailee Heard +46
Unanimous Preseason All-Big 12 selection Stailee Heard was efficient in many different ways Tuesday night.
She scored 15 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the field. She brought in six rebounds. She had three assists to no turnovers and had a couple of steals. But the most impressive thing about here stat line is that she finished Tuesday’s exhibition at plus-46 in just 27 minutes, which is frankly ridiculous.
If you’re unaware how plus/minus is tallied, that means that in Heard’s 27 minutes on the floor, the Cowgirls outscored OCU by 46 points.
In a game that ended 104-51, there were a lot of gaudy plus/minus numbers, but Heard was the only one who cracked the 40-point threshold. Amari Whiting (+38), Haleigh Timmer (+38), Wooten (+37) and Achol Akot (+32) all finished in the 30s.
3. 18 Steals
The Cowgirls took the ball away 18 times Tuesday night, which is a lot.
For reference, the Thunder was known for its tenacious defense last season as OKC battled to an NBA title. That historically great defense had a season-high of 18 steals twice. Again, I’m well aware Oklahoma Christian is not the Boston Celtics, but any time you see the number 18 in a steal column, it’s rather attention-grabbing.
Whiting led the way with four steals and Wooten had three. Timmer, Heard and Praise Egharevba each had two.
The Cowgirls forced 27 turnovers in total, leading to 35 OSU points off turnovers. Steals often lead to fastbreaks, where OSU scored 37 points.
A stifling defense is something Hoyt was confident in following the Cowgirls’ closed-door scrimmages.
“I felt really good about our defense the last couple of weeks,” said Hoyt a few weeks back. “I think that that’s a real strong point for us, whereas maybe before we hung our hat a little bit more on offense. It’s kinda fun because I don’t feel like we have to manufacture quite as much offensively when you’ve got the type of defense that I think we’ll have.”
