Report: Zac Robinson Hired as Tampa Bay Buccaneers Next Offensive Coordinator Thanks to Push by Baker Mayfield
Robinson landed with the Bucs “thanks in part to his connection to Mayfield.”
A former Cowboy is charged with getting the most out of a former Sooner (again).
Zac Robinson has been hired as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ next offensive coordinator, a move to revamp the coaching staff under fourth-year head coach Todd Bowles. Robinson spent the last two seasons calling the offensive for division rival, the Atlanta Falcons, but was not retained when head coach Raheem Morris was fired following his second 8-9 finish.
Bowles released a statement on just how impressed he was with Robinson, his offensive mind and his familiarity with the Buccaneers’ offensive talent.
“Zac is one of the bright offensive minds in our game, and during the interview process, I was very impressed with his plan for getting the most out of the talent we have on that side of the ball,” Bowles said in a statement according to ESPN. “He has a very good understanding of the strengths of our top offensive players from his time in the division the past two years and I am very confident in his ability to teach and develop our young players.”
One of those top offensive players is Baker Mayfield, the former Heisman winner and No. 1 overall draft pick who’s seen a bit of a career renaissance in Tampa.
Mayfield is entering his third year in a Buccaneers uniform which has afforded him his best consistent success, aside from an injury-hampered 7-10 record in 2025. And he’s done so despite playing for three different OCs the last three seasons. Robinson will be No. 4 and the Bucs’ fifth coordinator in five years. Tampa Bay dismissed Josh Grizzard after his squad finished No. 21 in total offense, dropping from No. 3 in 2024.
Mayfield reportedly pushed for Robinson to get the nod, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
This move reunites the former Bedlam QBs. Robinson was the Rams’ passing game coordinator on Sean McVay’s staff when Mayfield was traded to Los Angeles in 2022. Mayfield’s first game with the Rams was what really sparked his career comeback when he led the Rams to 17-16 comeback victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The two at least clicked, apparently, during their time together in LA.
It sounds like the feelings are mutual. According to Rapoport, Robinson took interviews with just two teams, Tampa Bay and Detroit, before settling on the Bucs. And that decision was made easier “thanks in part to his connection to Mayfield.” Mayfield is under contract with the Bucs through 2026.
Initially, Robinson was a popular pick among the Oklahoma State fanbase and elsewhere to replace Mike Gundy as the Cowboys’ head coach.
