Instant Recap: Oklahoma State Defeats BYU 67-51
Gray matched her season-high and Whiting dropped a double-double on her former team.
One Cowgirl played with a little extra motivation as OSU bounced back at home.
Oklahoma State defeated Brigham Young 67-51 to move to 12-1 inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowgirls were coming off their worst shooting game of the season when they went just 5-for-25 from 3 (20%) at Colorado on Sunday. They were able to shake that off in front of the home crowd, shooting 34%, and that percentage was even higher when the shooting still mattered.
OSU played a pretty ugly first quarter, committing eight turnovers and, worst off, playing some lackadaisical defense. The visiting Cougars went 10-of-20 from the field and took the first period 25-19. A couple of Cowgirls got hot over the next three quarters, but the biggest change was on the defensive end. BYU went 8-of-52 and scored just 26 points over the next three quarters.
The Cowgirls dominated the second quarter 20-3 and went into the half on a 17-1 run to take a 39-28 lead at the break. BYU went 1-for-13 from the field in the second and missed its last 12 shots. Micah Gray was red-shot in the second, scoring 14 of her 20 first-half points. She made six 3-pointers before intermission. She finished tying a season high with 25 points and was 7-of-14 from deep.

The Cowgirls were able to keep their foot down as they pulled out of intermission. That scoring run continued into the second half and reached 24-1 before BYU’s Cannon hit a 3-pointer with 7:05 left in the third. It ended a made field goal drought of nearly 11 minutes and included 15-straight misses from the field for the Cougars.
It was Amari Whiting’s turned to take the spotlight in the third quarter, scoring eight of her 16 points. She might have been the best player on the floor.

Against her former team, Whiting logged her first double-double as a Cowgirl with 16 and 10 and had a career-high three blocks. She always shows up on the defensive, but she seemed especially active on that end.

Stailee Heard, somewhat quietly, was approaching triple-double territory. She scored 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting and added seven rebounds and seven assists.
BYU again slumped heading out of the period, making just one of its last seven. They Cowgirls outscored BYU 18-13 in the third to push their lead to 57-41 heading into the final frame. The Cowgirls scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter, essentially putting it away. The Cougars finished the game on a 6-0 run and the Cowgirls missed their last five shots, but you can chalk those up to garbage time.
With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 17-5 and 6-3 in Big 12 play. Next up, a trip out west. OSU will face Arizona at 3 p.m. Sunday in Tucson.
