BOXSCORE

Cowboy fans got a heartbreaker on Valentine’s Day.

Oklahoma State fell to No. 19 Oklahoma 10-1 on Saturday as the in-state rivals competed in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown in Arlington. With the loss, the Pokes fall to 0-2 on the year and the Sooners improve to 2-0.

The Cowboys’ only run came in the top of the fifth, but things were already getting out of hand.

The Sooners got on the scoreboard to stay when Jaxon Willits rocked a double to right center to score two in the bottom of the first. They piled on again with an RBI single by Kyle Branch in the second and then went up 4-0 with a sac-fly run by Dayton Tockey.

Kollin Ritchie scored that lone Cowboy run with a double to right field to pull OSU to within 4-1.

But then Willits scored again, answering with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-1. Later in the inning, OU’s Trey Gambill blew it open with a three-run homer to right field to make it 8-1.

The Sooners padded their lead with RBIs from Dayton Tockey and Alec Blair in the eighth to go up 10-1.

Mario Pesca got the start for the Pokes but gave up four runs in three innings, striking out three. Brennan Phillips gave up four more in two with three Ks before Josh Holliday went to Kai Fye. In 2 2/3 innings, he gave up two runs and struck one out. OSU closed with Bryce LeBlanc for the final batter which was lined out.

Oklahoma’s LJ Mercurius struck out 12 Cowboys in five and a third innings and allowed that single run before being spelled by Michael Catalano and Reid Hensley.

Next up, the Cowboys square off against Vanderbilt at 10:30 am Sunday at Globe Life Field.
