Carson Benge Sets New York Mets Rookie Hit Record

Carson Benge continued his breakout rookie season by making some history. The former Cowboy and No. 19th overall pick set a New York Mets rookie record with his 156th hit of the season in the Mets’ 154th game. He started his hitting with his 19th home run, bringing him within one hit of Pete Alonso’s record.

He tied the record in the seventh.

And then in the eighth inning, he hit a check-swing roller to score Franciso Lindo to help the Mets cap a 10-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

In 149 games this season, Benge is turning in a.276/.339/.420 with 19 home runs, 61 RBI and 22 stolen bases. That’s also a nice rebound after he struggled out of the gate, hitting just .136 in his first 20 major league outings. To add more orange storylines to the mix, Benge’s former teammate at OSU Nolan McLean is also endearing himself to Mets fans. He’s 11-10 on the mound in his second year and currently sitting at a 3.18 ERA.
