Big 12 Roundup: Tech Claws Out Ranked Win, West Virginia Upsets Virginia

Although there wasn’t quite an Oklahoma State beating Oregon moment in Week 3, there were still plenty of storylines to follow throughout the Big 12.

Here’s a roundup of the league’s games.

Texas Tech Comes Back to Beat Houston

For a quarter, it looked as if Houston might go to Lubbock and blow the Red Raiders out, but Texas Tech warmed up as the game went on and beat the Cougars 28-26.

The game came down to a 2-point conversion attempt from Houston, but no matter how far Conner Weigman stretched, he was oh, so short of the pylon. OSU fans know the pain.

Late-arriving Florida State transfer Thomas Castellanos actually took the first snap at quarterback for the Red Raiders. It could have gone better.

That would be the only pass he threw.

After Houston went up 10-0, the Red Raiders scored back-to-back touchdowns to take their first lead, and the seesaw was on.

Will Hammond threw for 257 yards, a touchdown and a pick, while Weigman finished with 282 yards and three touchdowns. It was one of the rare instances where the player of the game was probably the guy on the losing team.

Whether this game says more about Tech or Houston, we’ll have to wait and see.

Best Virginia

The Mountaineers are 3-0 for the first time since 2018 after going down to Charlotte and upsetting No. 25 Virginia 38-27.

Although it was an upset, it wasn’t an accident. West Virginia was up 38-21 with less than a minute to play and outgained the Cavaliers 437-354.

OU transfer quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. did it all for the Mountaineers. He had 190 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions and ran for another 123 yards and three scores. It’s already the second time this season Hawkins has thrown for 100 and ran for 100 in a game, and in the lone game he didn’t, he ran for 96 yards.

Hawkins’ biggest highlight from the game came when he did his best Drew Mestemaker impersonation (without the crash landing).

The Cowboys’ run defense better be on its Ps and Qs next week because the tandem of Hawkins and Cam Cook (who ran for 123 yards against Virginia) will be quite the test.

Sun Devils Survive London

It cannot be easy to pack up your team in the middle of the season and take them across many time zones into a foreign country. And Arizona State and Kansas did that for their Big 12 opener, no less.

The Sun Devils beat the Jayhawks 24-17 at Wembley Stadium.

ASU was up 24-7 early in the fourth quarter, but the Jayhawks didn’t give up. A touchdown and a field goal later, and the game was down to one score. But Arizona State was able to pound out the final 3:44 on its next drive to end the comeback attempt.

Kansas actually outgained Arizona State 414-228, but the Jayhawks threw an interception and lost two fumbles.

Colorado, You Good?

After representing the Big 12 well in Week 1 with a win over the ACC, Colorado went to Big Ten territory this weekend and lost to Northwestern 41-7.

The Buffaloes had four turnovers to the Northwestern’s one, while the Wildcats outgained Colorado 423-348. Not great. Not great, at all.
