There’s a world where Payne County is all of a sudden Miami Dolphins territory.

ESPN’s Field Yates released his first 2027 NFL Mock Draft on Thursday, featuring Drew Mestemaker going No. 2 overall to the Miami Dolphins. The only guy Mestemaker was behind was Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith, who Yates had going to the Los Angeles Chargers.

In that scenario, Mestemaker would join forces with former Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon — a backfield that would see a lot of teal popping up in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

“Miami has needs everywhere, but its modest investment in Malik Willis (whose three-year, $67.5 million contract has no guaranteed money beyond 2027) puts quarterback in play. The 20-year-old Mestemaker oozes upside, as the 6-3 215-pounder is a legitimate dual-threat player with exceptional creativity inside and outside of the pocket.” — Yates, ESPN

Yates has long had an affinity for Mestemaker in this process. Mel Kiper, Yates’ colleague, has also come around on the Cowboys’ gunslinger, with Kiper listing Mestemaker as his No. 2 overall prospect on his initial big board — again behind only Smith.

Although both draft analysts are high on Mestemaker, it still doesn’t sound like a certainty he’ll be in the NFL next season.

“It’s gonna be interesting — does he come out or does he stay?” said Kiper on ESPN’s First Draft. “Another year would really benefit him. He’s not far removed from being safety and a punter in high school, but here we are talking about the second overall pick in terms of the big board.”

Kiper noted there was an underthrow to Wyatt Young in the Cowboys’ loss to Houston on Saturday, but noted that’s a rarity.

“He doesn’t miss many throws, and when he does have a hiccup, he bounces right back,” Kiper said. “I love the ability to just forget about it. You don’t know whether they’re winning, losing. You don’t know whether it’s first quarter, final drive when you look at Drew Mestemaker, and it’s amazing he’s only 20 years of age.

“For me, yeah, he can fill out that frame. He’s gonna get bigger, stronger. Arm strength is gonna get better. He’s only 20 years of age, as I keep saying. It’s amazing where he was and where he is now, but I put him at two. I thought about other guys like (Texas edge rusher Colin) Simmons and (Notre Dame corner Leonard) Moore to put in that second spot, but here’s a quarterback that’s gonna keep improving.”

Kiper said that with Mestemaker’s inexperience, he hopes that if Mestemaker does go into the 2027 draft that he isn’t an immediate starter in the league, rather taking the Fernando Mendoza approach with the Las Vegas Raiders. Mendoza went No. 1 overall last year but has played in just one blowout loss this season, where he threw eight passes.

Yates pointed to Mestemaker’s need to take better care of the football, but he was in early on Mestemaker and the train is still moving forward.

“You mentioned that short memory he has, that first half against Houston on Saturday night wasn’t Drew Mestemaker’s best work,” Yates said. “He did have a ridiculous throw. You know how we do this thing, Mel, when quarterbacks at pro days make these throws, and we all go bananas over them when they’re throwing against no defense in no pads and it’s the perfect environment to make ridiculous throws. Drew Mestemaker had one of those throws in an actual game on Saturday night against a Houston team that I think is now like (14th) in the country and a good defense. And Drew Mestemaker helped Oklahoma State stay in that game.

“I’m a big fan. I think the size is right about where Drake Maye was coming out of North Carolina — big, mobile, athletic quarterback with all sorts of highlight plays.”
