The Cowboys are expected to be without starting safety Mose Phillips for the remainder of the season.
An Oklahoma State official confirmed the news. Phillips started the four games the Cowboys have won this season. He suffered a shoulder injury against UCF and has been out since.
Phillips transferred to OSU this past offseason from Missouri. He had also spent time at Virginia Tech. In the five games he played as a Cowboy, Phillips had 23 total tackles and an interception that helped turn the tide of the Cowboys’ win against West Virginia.
Per PFF, Phillips played 199 defensive snaps this season, which still ranks ninth on the team despite missing half of the UCF game and all of the Houston game.
In his place, North Texas transfer Evan Jackson has gotten more run. Jackson has played 142 snaps the past two games and had played just 75 in the four games before that. Jackson has a dozen tackles as a Cowboy after making 130 across the past three seasons with the Mean Green.
Because the injury is expected to be season-ending, Phillips is on the exempt list for the Big 12’s Player Availability Report, which dropped on Wednesday night. Three Cowboys appeared on the report: DT Landon Dean (OUT), WR Dayvon Standard (QUESTIONABLE) and LB Gunnar Wilson (PROBABLE).
Dean has missed the past two games and played 38 defensive snaps in the Cowboys’ first four contests. Standard is looking to make his college debut after the freshman suffered an injury in fall camp.
The injury report was more robust on the Buffaloes’ side.
Most notably, running back Micah Welch is ruled out. Welch went into last week with the most carries on the team but was injured during his first carry against Utah and didn’t return. He has 220 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns this season.
CU sack-leader Lamont Lester is also listed as questionable. He’s played 142 defensive snaps this season where he’s made four sacks and six tackles for loss. He played just three snaps against Utah last week.
