Chianti Roberts cannot believe the amenities OSU players get these days
“You mean these jokers get this? And we had to play in the hot box?’”
There was a terrific piece on the history of GIA in today’s Oklahoman. John Helsley wrote the story and got some awesome quotes from lots of former players, including Chianti Roberts.
Roberts can’t believe the GIA facilities these days. You mean, you and Big Country didn’t tape an Ok State Cribs back in the day, Chianti?
“I still remember the feeling when I went to the first game when they went to 13,000 seats. And I still remember the feeling when I walked in. I was ticked off,” Roberts said jokingly. “I was like, ‘You mean these jokers get this? And we had to play in the hot box?’”
The hot box. That’s a great name for the old 6,000-seat GIA. I was actually talking to somebody recently about how going from old GIA to new GIA is secretly OSU’s biggest gaffe of the last 20 years when it comes to hoops.
Of course, nobody could have foreseen the Thunder coming or OSU football taking off like it did, but I bet Mike Holder would rather be trying to figure out how to fill old GIA than the 13,611 the new place holds.
“I still get mad about it,” continued Roberts. “When I walk in the locker room, it’s like, ‘You guys are spoiled. Get out of here.’ It’s funny, because I know were the genesis for that. And I’m very proud of that. Still jealous, but very proud.”
