100 Days of Summer: Get to Know No. 47 Tyler Ferguson
Our next Cowboy went through a position change this spring. After two seasons of spotty reps at defensive tackle, Tyler Ferguson has made the switch to the offensive side of the ball.
How he got to OSU
Ferguson came to Stillwater by way of McKinney Boyd High School (McKinney, Tex.) where he played defensive end and received all-district honors twice.
What he’s done in Stillwater
After a redshirt season in 2014, Ferguson got some reps at defensive tackle in two games in 2015 and two more in 2016. At 6-foot-2 and 260, Fergson is a bit slight for the DL. But he made use of his opportunities. Against Kansas in 2015, he recorded one tackle, a sack for 10 yards. In the season opener in 2016, Ferguson recorded another tackle for loss.
Role in 2017
In OSU’s spring media guide, which is released prior to the start of spring practice, Ferguson is still listed as a defensive tackle with jersey No. 62. But if you were in the Sherman E. Smith training center in March and April, you may have noticed him wearing a different number and a different jersey.
Gone is the white uni that signifies a defender. Ferguson is now donning a bright orange No. 47 offensive jersey. He’s with Jason McEndoo’s cowboy back group, a position more suited for his size. When he sees the field, it will probably be in more of a blocking fullback role. The Cowboys are trying to find a replacement for Zac Veatch, an underrated cog in 2016’s offense. Don’t be surprised to see Ferguson contribute on special teams, as well.
