Oklahoma State golf bows out before NCAA finals
OSU failed to get to the finals of the NCAA championship for the second year in a row.
For the second year in a row OSU’s golf team failed to get to the match play portion of the NCAA golf championships.[1. Last year they actually failed to reach the NCAA golf tournament altogether.]
This year — for the 66th time in 67 years — they made the NCAA championships and were one of the 30 teams to make the initial three-round part. But they couldn’t secure one of the final eight match play spots[1. This is just the fifth year of the final eight match play format.]. The final eight teams will play match play over the weekend but the Pokes will be headed home.
The way the NCAAs work is that five guys from each team compete for the first three rounds and you take the four best scores from each day. So 12 rounds total. And it looks like OSU will miss the finals by just five shots.
One reason is because sophomore Patrick Winther was as effective as both you and I were. Literally. He didn’t even factor into the tournament with a 78-75-82 effort.
Totals below:
Ian Davis: -5
Talor Gooch: +1
Jordan Niebrugge: +3
Kevin Dougherty: +9
Patrick Winther: +25
I guess this is better than murdering the first three rounds like they did in 2010 (14 under) then getting beat in the match play finals by a team that barely squeaked in (Augusta State was 1 under that year and beat OSU in the match play finals).
