A Look at the All-Time Series between Texas and OSU

Texas leads the all-time series, but OSU is having the better decade.

Texas leads the all-time series against Oklahoma State in football 25-9, but it’s been one heck of a decade for the Pokes. They’ve won seven of the last 10 meetings against the Longhorns dating back to 2010 after winning just twice from 1916, when the series began, to 2009, when OSU really took it up a notch under Mike Gundy.

That’s a jarring stat, to be sure, but I’ll admit it’s a bit misleading. Texas and OSU faced off just five times between 1916 and 1943 — all Texas wins. And then the two programs faced off just five more times between 1944 and 1995. They only started meeting regularly in 1996 when Texas left the Southwest Conference to help form what is now known as the Big 12, and it’s been mostly competitive after UT dominated early.

Big 12 early days

Texas was a force in the early days of the Big 12, and OSU was trying to find its way under Bob Simmons, then Les Miles, then Mike Gundy. The result was Texas beating OSU in 13 of its 14 first attempts in the Big 12, with OSU’s lone win — in 1997 — coming in 42-16 fashion.

Two wins in the 1900s

In 14 meetings in the 1900s between the two programs, OSU won just twice: Once in 1944 under Jim Lookabaugh and then again more than 50 years later in 1997. OSU won the 1944 meeting 13-8. Two years later, OSU suffered the second-worst loss of the series to Texas, falling 54-6 to UT in Austin. The two programs went nearly two decades before facing each other again.

Lopsided outcomes

On the whole, this series tends to produce some good ones. The 1917 showdown was a 7-3 Texas win; the 2015 OSU win was a thrilling 30-27 final; it was a 38-35 win for OSU in 2018. But when Texas is rolling, it has a tendency to smash. UT won by 46 points in 1946 and by 57 (!) points in 1996. It also beat OSU by 39 in 2003 and by 35 in 2000. OSU’s largest margin of victory in the series, meanwhile, was 26 points — that 42-16 win — in 1997.

Longest win streaks

OSU’s longest winning streak over Texas in the series is just four games, which spanned 2015-2018. Texas’ longest winning streak came in the early days of the Big 12, when it won 12 straight over OSU from 1998-2009.
