Alex Hale Named Lou Groza Award Semifinalist

Oklahoma State kicker Alex Hale has been named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, given annually to college football’s top place kicker. It’s the second time he’s made it this far.

Fresh off of his 2-for-2 outing in a win over Oklahoma, Hale is the current FBS leader in made field goals per game (2.22). He leads the Big 12 and is fourth nationally in scoring with 90 points to his name (foot).

He scored the Cowboys’ final Bedlam points, maybe ever, in game OSU won by three. To add a poetic layer, Hale was named a Groza semifinalist in 2020 until an injury in the Bedlam pregame warmups sidelined him.

He’s been nails all season, even before the Cowboys’ offense got going. Hale also set the Oklahoma State record with five made field goals against Kansas State, and then the two-game record with four more against Kansas.

Of the 20 semifinalists, Hale is one of only six to have made it this far in previous years. The Orange Bowl’s judging panel will further whittle down its list to three finalists to be announced Nov. 28. The winner will be announced on ESPN during the Home Depot College Football Awards on Friday, Dec. 8.
