Arizona quarterback Grant Gunnell has entered the transfer portal on the heels of the program’s decision to part ways with head coach Kevin Sumlin. The development should make Gunnell, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, one of the most sought-after quarterback recruits on the transfer market.

It comes at an interesting time both for Gunnell and for Oklahoma State. The Houston, Texas native strongly considered Oklahoma State in his recruitment before picking Arizona in a decision that allowed him to follow Sumlin, who had recruited him at Texas A&M. Oklahoma State did not take a quarterback recruit in its 2021 recruiting class, but Mike Gundy this week played coy about whether OSU would consider adding one at some point.

“Well, I mean we’re always looking for what’s out there, but these are the positions that we feel that that we needed to fill to solidify the numbers that we look for by position across our board,” he said.

Gunnell played in just four games for the Wildcats this season, completing 64 of his 93 passing attempts for 625 yards, 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He also rushed for 22 total yards.

OSU did not actively recruit a quarterback in the 2021 cycle, but that doesn’t entirely preclude it from doing so at some point. That decision could signal OSU is content with Spencer Sanders, Shane Illingworth and Ethan Bullock moving to 2021. It could also signal some optimism over the addition of Gunnar Gundy, Mike’s son who is walking on this spring. It could also mean that OSU’s high school targets at the position were uninspiring.

Where Gunnell lands will be a huge topic of conversation though, and with OSU *potentially* in the market, it’d make plenty of sense for Gunnell to get back closer to home. OSU could offer a QB-friendly offense to join and the benefit of previous relationships to boot.
