The Cowboys are reportedly in talks to swipe a defensive coordinator from the SEC.

Auburn defensive coordinator Derek Mason is emerging as a candidate for OSU’s vacant position, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman. Mason was in Stillwater this week, according to Eli Lederman of the Tulsa World.

Mason, 52, just took over as the Tigers’ DC for the 2021 season. Auburn ranked 61st nationally in total defense in 2021, giving up 373.8 yards per game. The Tigers ranked 27th nationally in scoring defense, giving up only 21.8 points a game, which was the third-best in the SEC. That’s not too shabby for a team that finished 6-7.

Before taking over the Tigers’ defense, Mason was the head coach at Vanderbilt for seven seasons, amassing a 27-55 record. That was his only gig as a head coach, but he has also made stops with the the Minnesota Vikings, Stanford, Ohio, New Mexico State and Utah as an assistant. Before becoming an assistant defensive backs coach with the Vikings in 2007, Mason had spent a good chunk of his coaching career on the offensive side of the ball, primarily coaching wide receivers.

Before getting the head gig at Vandy, Mason was an associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Stanford. He was the Co-DC in 2011 when Stanford and Oklahoma State played in the Fiesta Bowl. Mason was the sole DC for the Cardinal for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2012.

Money will be an interesting thing to track with Mason. He is making $1.5 million a year as the Auburn DC. Jim Knowles made $800,000 for the 2021 season, but he was reportedly set to get a significant increase in pay before Ohio State wooed him to Columbus.
