Barry Sanders Joined FOX Booth During Holiday Bowl
Sanders ran for 222 yards in the 1988 Holiday Bowl
Just before Oklahoma State was about to kick off against Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl, the best player in program history was on a different channel during a different bowl game.
Former OSU running back Barry Sanders joined FOX broadcast team Joel Klatt and Gus Johnson in the booth during the Holiday Bowl between USC and Louisville on Wednesday night, only minutes before the Cowboys were set to start on ESPN.
Topics discussed included Sanders’ impressive performance in the 1988 Holiday Bowl, Ollie Gordon and even college football today with the transfer portal and NIL.
Sanders ran for 222 yards and a bowl-record five touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 62-14 win against Wyoming in that 1988 Holiday Bowl. Sanders was reminded that back then bowl stats were not added to regular-season stats, which would have bolstered his record 2,628-yard and 39-touchdown Heisman winning season even more. Sanders jokingly asked who they needed to talk to to get that changed. He was in San Diego most of the week celebrating that performance.
Sanders also praised Gordon and compared modern-day college football to the NFL.
Here is a short clip from Sanders’ time in the booth.
