Big 12 Recruiting Update: Kansas Nabs an Oklahoma Preps Star

Texas Tech makes a jump, while most of the Big 12 remained steady.

Kansas has far and away more commitments in its 2020 football recruiting class than any other program in the Big 12. Its fast and furious collection of talent has sent it up the rankings — the Jayhawks are fourth in the Big 12 — but the tactic is largely one that prioritizes quantity over quality. As you can see below, they have four more pledges than cross-state foe K-State and even Iowa State, both of which have already landed 18 commitments in the cycle.

TEAM TOTAL COMMITS TOTAL POINTS
Oklahoma 15 236.96
Texas 11 211.18
Iowa State 18 180.61
Kansas 22 172.11
Kansas State 18 169.96
Oklahoma State 13 165.83
Texas Tech 13 154.01
TCU 10 152.55
West Virginia 12 151.48
Baylor 12 146.21

As you can tell by per-player average, though, the average player ranking for Kansas is dead last in the Big 12 behind. As I say each week, this metric is the most revealing because when each program has filled all its spots, the per-player averages will weigh heavily in the final ranking.

Rank Team Per-player avg.
1 Texas 92.72
2 OU 91.26
3 TCU 87.74
4 Oklahoma State 86.18
5 West Virginia 85.47
6 Iowa State 85.31
7 Texas Tech 85.20
8 Baylor 85.02
9 Kansas State 84.43
10 Kansas 83.39

Here’s what you may have missed in the Big 12 over the last week.

1. Kansas grabs a Moore standout

Moore athlete/running back Daniel Hishaw Jr., a three-star 5-foot-10, 207-pound prospect, committed to Kansas this week to give KU its 22nd pledge of the cycle. Hishaw Jr. held nine offers, the biggest of which included Kansas, Nevada, Central Michigan, North Texas and a few other smaller schools.

2. Tech makes a leap

Texas Tech added three-star tight end John Holcomb to its class this week, giving them their third-highest ranked pledge of the cycle and shooting them from No. 9 to No. 7 in the class rankings within the Big 12. Holcomb is a 6-4 talent from Texas who also had offers from SMU, Army, Indiana and others.

3. Iowa State keeps one home

This isn’t exactly a needle-mover, but three-star backer Cole Pederson, whose only Division I offer listed online is Iowa State, committed to … Iowa State! He’s a 6-3, 215-pound recruit now rated as ISU’s third-highest-ranked defensive commitment in 2020.
