The Big 12 will require all schools to release availability reports, more commonly known as injury reports, in football and men’s and women’s basketball this season, according to reporting from On3’s Brett McMurphy. The Big 12 confirmed the report not long after.

Football teams must post an update three days before kickoff (so usually Wednesday) and one 90 minutes before kickoff. Programs designate players as available, probable, questionable or out.

It’s unclear when basketball programs would be required to provide updates, but those designations are limited to available, game-time decision or out.

It would not be surprising to see some level of gamesmanship from coaches in the Big 12 in the first season of injury reports. However, it is worth noting that, where Oklahoma State football is concerned, Dave Hunziker typically provides fairly accurate injury updates in the pregame radio broadcast about two hours prior to kickoff.

The Big Ten was the first power conference to require injury reports in 2023. The SEC followed suit last year, and now the ACC and the Big 12 join the list. All of this of course mirrors the process the NFL employs.

Some have expressed that a formal injury reports take pressure off athletes who could be harassed by gamblers hunting for inside information.
