Can Tylan upend Alabama’s star?

Tylan Wallace’s Biletnikoff resume is complete.

Wallace has played his final game before the award will be handed out Dec. 6. National receiving yards leader Andy Isabella’s season is over, locking in his numbers, but Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy can still add to his.

Voting will take place between Tuesday and next Monday (Dec. 3), meaning Jeudy’s numbers in the SEC Championship will also be taken into account. Here are how the three stack up with one another after 12 games.

Player School Games Rec. Yards TDs
Andy Isabella Massachusetts 12 102 1,698 13
Tylan Wallace Oklahoma State 12 79 1,408 11
Jerry Jeudy Alabama 12 56 1,079 11

The race is a lot tighter than perhaps originally thought when the finalists were announced. Wallace having only 64 yards against TCU didn’t put him much closer to Isabella’s numbers. Meanwhile, Jeudy scored a touchdown and had 77 receiving yards in the Iron Bowl. Of the three finalists, Jeudy’s 19.2 yards per reception is the highest, Wallace’s 17.8 is second and Isabella’s 16.6 is third.

OSU put out this graphic with a lot of pro-Wallace stats.

Screen Shot 2018-11-26 at 11.27.14 AM.pngThe graphic displays Wallace’s consistency, especially when playing in big games. During the time of this writing, Jeudy leads the award’s fan vote with 49 percent to Wallace’s 47 percent. Isabella has only a little under 5 percent of the fan vote.

The Biletnikoff winner’s team hasn’t had less than 10 wins since 2013, when Brandin Cooks won with Oregon State in 2013. Cooks did so with 128 receptions, 1,730 yards and 16 touchdowns after the Beavers’ bowl game. Oregon State finished 7-6 that season. With that said, the past four winners were all on 10+-win teams. UMass’ season is over at 4-8, OSU is 6-6 and Alabama is 12-0.

Although Isabella is 290 yards above Wallace, a group of five receiver hasn’t won the award since Troy Edwards won in 1998. That season, Edwards had 140 receptions, 1,996 yards and 27 touchdowns, all three stats are the most any Biletnikoff winner has had since the award’s creation in 1994.

Of the 24 Biletnikoff winners, three are from OSU and seven came from Big 12 teams. Alabama has one winner in Amari Cooper, he is one of two SEC winners. UMass, an independent school, has never had a Biletnikoff winner.
