Former Cowboy Cade Cunningham put on a show Friday night on the hardwood against the Atlanta Hawks. Former Sooner Trae Young, though, got the final word.

The two combined to score for 71 points and 20 assists in a head-to-head regular-season battle that took place in Detroit, home of Cunningham and the Pistons. Young’s Hawks took home the win, 136-112 after pulling away in the second half.

Cunningham scored a career-high 35 points in the losing effort and had eight assists and nine rebounds to boot, just shy of a 30+ point triple-double. Early in the game he even picked Young’s pocket clean at the top of the key for an easy layup on the other end.

The NBA season is only a week old as Cunningham runs head first into his second season, but he has clearly been one of the league’s breakout stars. On the season he is now averaging 22.5 points, 6.3 assists and 5.5 boards per game — improvements from last season across the board (and the same in the rebounding department) — while also shooting it a touch more efficient from the floor.
