Cale Gundy, the younger brother of Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, has stepped down as the receivers coach at Oklahoma.

According to Cale Gundy, a player wasn’t paying attention during a film session, and Gundy went over and took his iPad and began reading what the player had written down aloud. Gundy wrote that there was “one particular word” he shouldn’t have said.

“I want to be very clear: the words I read aloud from that screen were not my words,” Gundy wrote. “What I said was not malicious; it wasn’t even intentional. Still, I am mature enough to know that the word I said was shameful and hurtful, no matter my intentions.”

Gundy played quarterback at OU from 1990 to 1993, where he had 6,142 yards and 51 total touchdowns. He had been a constant on OU’s staff for about 24 years, coaching under Bob Stoops, Lincoln Riley and now Brent Venables.

“It is with sadness I accept Coach Gundy’s resignation,” Venables said in a release. “He’s dedicated more than half of his life to Oklahoma Football and has served our program and university well. We’re thankful for that commitment. We also acknowledge that in stepping aside he’s placed the program and the welfare of our student-athletes first. In coaching and in life, we’re all accountable four our actions and the resulting outcomes.”

Gundy was the Sooners’ running backs coach for most of his tenure. Former OU running back Joe Mixon took to Twitter in support of his former coach in a page-long statement.

“Most importantly Coach Gundy is not, and I repeat is not a racist in any way nor has a racist bone in his body, mind, or soul,” Mixon wrote. “I grew up in the Bay area and went to school obviously in Oklahoma. I know racists, I have witnessed both obvious and discreet forms of racism and have known and detested even more actual racists. Coach Gundy is the farthest thing from this type of person.”
