Chasing History: Justice Hill Passes Barry Sanders in Number of 100-Yard Games

Justice Hill was let off the leash Saturday.

Hill, OSU’s junior running back, had a season-high 31 touches in the Cowboys’ 48-28 victory against Kansas.

Hill’s 189 yards moved him to eighth all-time in OSU’s career rushing yards list, ahead of Joseph Randle. Depending on touches, Hill might still be a few weeks away from moving ahead of seventh-place Tatum Bell, but if Hill continues to get the ball like he did Saturday, he could start chewing up this list.

Name Yards Years Active
Thurman Thomas 5,001 1984-87
Terry Miller 4,754 1974-77
David Thompson 4,318 1993-96
Kendall Hunter 4,181 2007-10
Barry Sanders 3,797 1986-88
Ernest Anderson 3,780 1979-83
Tatum Bell 3,409 2000-03
Justice Hill 3,186 2016-present
Joseph Randle 3,085 2010-12
Gerald Hudson 2,924 1988-90

Despite his high touches and yards, Hill only added one touchdown to his all-time stats. He’s tied for ninth on OSU’s all-time leaderboard. The three other players Hill is tied with played four seasons at OSU where as Hill is two seasons and five games into his career.

Name Touchdowns Years Active
Barry Sanders 53 1986-88
Terry Miller 49 1974-77
Thurman Thomas 47 1984-87
Joseph Randle 40 2010-12
Kendall Hunter 37 2007-10
Tatum Bell 34 2000-03
Jeremy Smith 34 2009-13

Justice Hill 27 2016-present
Desmond Roland 27 2011-14
David Thompson 27 1993-96
Keith Toston 27 2006-09

Despite his high number of carries, Hill gained some ground on Vernand Morency. With his number of career carries, it’s difficult to get this number to move too much, but Hill has moved this stat up .28 yards since the start of the year.

Name Yards Per Carry (min: 200) Years Active
Barry Sanders 6.8 1986-88
Dantrell Savage 5.99 2006-07

Kendall Hunter 5.91 2007-10
Vernand Morency 5.9 2002-04
Justice Hill 5.78 2016-present

Gerald Hudson 5.68 1988-90
Joseph Randle 5.47 2010-12
Terry Miller 5.45 1974-77

If he keeps touching the ball 30 something times a game, Hill will also start moving up the yards per game list. Saturday was Hill’s 31st game. He’s now played more than Gerald Hudson and is one game behind Barry Sanders’ 32.

Name Yards Per Game (min: 20) Years Active
Barry Sanders 118.7 1986-88
Terry Miller 113.2 1974-77
Thurman Thomas 106.4 1984-87
Justice Hill 102.8 2016-present
David Thompson 98.1 1993-96
Gerald Hudson 97.5 1988-90

Worley Taylor 92.4 1977-80
Kendall Hunter 89 2007-10
Vernand Morency 88.7 2002-04

This might be the closest Barry and Justice ever are in carries, and through it, Sanders has averaged a little over a yard more per carry.

Gerald Hudson 515 1988-90

A commentor mentioned I should add the number of 100-yard games to this ongoing list, and what can I say, I’m a man of the people. But in all seriousness, it made a lot of sense to do so considering Hill passed Sanders in this with his performance in Lawrence.

If Hill has 100 yards in OSU’s remaining seven games plus a bowl game, he’ll share the top spot with Terry Miller despite having played a season less than Miller.
